About ISSB
Prior to World War II, the commanding officers’ discretion was used in place of a predetermined selection process for officers cadre. The candidates’ educational backgrounds and bloodlines were the primary criteria used in the selection process. In 1942, the British established war office selection boards to institutionalize the induction pathways of officers cadre as a result of the experience of World War II. In 1943, British India received the same arrangements, which were later superseded by services selection boards.
These boards used scientific personality screening mechanisms and a two-to-three-day examination system that included interviews and written tests. These boards earned the trust of the Royal Army in the scenario that followed the war by ensuring that the army received a steady supply of high-quality content.
As part of the partition plan in 1947, Pakistan received three services selection boards, which were merged into the inter services selection board in 1952.
The ISSB Jobs, was initially operational in Lahore, but it later moved to Kohat in the old Park Lane hotel building. In 1982 and 1987, respectively, two additional ISSB centers were established in Gujranwala and Malir as a result of increased induction into the Pakistan Defence Forces. On the orders of the Chief of Army Staff, the ISSB center Quetta, which was established in 1999 to assist youth from Balochistan province, has ben made permanent since September 2021.
